As part of 1951’s Film Series, we will be hosting a screening of the film, “MATANGI/ MAYA / M.I.A” at The New Parkway Theater with a barista-lead film discussion to follow!
“MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A.” is a personal profile of the critically acclaimed artist, chronicling her remarkable journey from refugee immigrant to pop star. She began as Matangi. Daughter of the founder of Sri Lanka’s armed Tamil resistance. When her family fled to the UK, she became Maya, a precocious and creative immigrant teenager in London. Finally, she emerged on the global stage as M.I.A., having created an identity that pulled from every corner of her journey along the way. Drawn from personal video recordings from the past 22 years, this film provides intimate access to the artist in her battles with the music industry and mainstream media as her success explodes, becoming one of the most recognizable and outspoken voices in music today.
If you’d like to attend, tickets can be purchased on The Parkway Theater’s Website!
